I tried removing the side buttons from the case so that there’s only the button cut-outs, but the phone’s buttons are not long enough to reach the cut-outs. Before I give up, I’m contemplating trying to cut out the entire side button area on the case so that my finger can reach the phone buttons.

Yeah, but a lesser seller would've lazily given me a paltry discount and had me hunt ebay for the part myself. I would absolutely buy from them again. It wont let me type more so A+++
