"In challenging many of [Irish-American's] most cherished myths, he has done it a real service. His "warts and all" picture of the Irish-American diaspora enhances respect for the emigrants' courage, endurance, and singlemindedness. The reality is more impressive than the myth."--CanadianReview of Studies in Nationalism, "A veritable monument of research and analysis...[and] a historiographicaland expository achievement of high order."--Journal of American EthnicHistory, "A spirited and far-ranging synthesis...[Miller] has produced a major work of scholarship and analysis, rich in information, trenchant in argument and broad in its grasp. Synopsis
Rich in human detail, penetrating in analysis, this book is social history on an epic scale. The first "transatlantic" history of the Irish, Emigrants and Exiles offers the fullest account yet of the diverse waves of Irish emigration to North America. Drawing on enormous original research, Miller focuses on the thought and behavior of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals, and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems and folklore. Miller shows that the exile mentality was deeply rooted in Irish history, culture and personality, and it profoundly affected both the traumatic course of modern Irish history and the Irish experience in America., Miller focuses on the thought and behavior of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals, and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems, and folklore. Depicting how Irish history, culture and personality lay at the root of the exile mentality, Miller discusses the profound effect this mentality had on both the traumatic course of modern Irish history and the Irish experience in America., From the 1660s to the early 1900s, no fewer than seven million people emigrated from Ireland to North America. This vast flow at once reflected and compelled enormous social changes on both sides of the Atlantic. In this book Miller chronicles the momentous causes of the Irish emigration and its far-reaching impact - on the people themselves, on the land they left behind, and on the new one they came to. Drawing on enormous original research, Miller focuses on the thought and behaviour of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, Catholic and Protestant, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals, and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems, and folklore. Monumental in scope, Emigrants and Exiles embraces all the successive waves of Irish emigration, illuminating their differences as well as their common bonds.

The book was shipped very quickly and arrived exceptionally well-packaged. It was essentially as described in the listing--no surprise there. I would highly recommend this seller for a very positive experience. This book (Vol. 4) represents one more in my quest to have a complete set of all 15. Still looking for Vols. 5 and 14 in as good a shape as your Vol 4. If you can help me there, shoot me an e-mail Larry-BOS. Thanks
