Synopsis
Including countless exercises and worked examples, this advanced reference work and textbook will be extremely useful for the work of many industrial scientists. It teaches readers to design kinetic experiments involving heterogeneous catalysts, to characterize these catalysts, to acquire rate data, to find heat and mass transfer limitations in these data, to select reaction models, to derive rate expressions based on these models, and to assess the consistency of these rate equations., This advanced undergraduate/graduate textbook teaches readers to design kinetic experiments involving heterogeneous catalysts, to satisfactorily characterize these catalysts, to acquire valid rate data, to determine the presence or absence of heat and mass transfer limitations in these data, to select and simplify reaction models, to derive rate expressions based on these models, and to assess the consistency of these rate equations. A special emphasis is placed on assessing mass transfer effects, particularly in liquid-phase reactions. Sufficient background information and discussion of the assumptions related to the derivation of adsorption isotherms and reaction models has been provided to allow the reader to understand the limitations of these models and to feel comfortable in their application. Both ideal and nonideal surfaces are considered, and enzyme catalysis is also discussed. There are numerous worked-out examples, and homework exercises. The book will be used as a textbook in courses in kinetics and/or catalysis and also as a supplement in advanced undergraduate chemical engineering courses on kinetics and reactor design, as well as a guide for researchers in catalysis in industry. The most probable discipline for its use is chemical engineering, but it can also be used in materials science, fuels science, and chemistry programs. Many new practitioners in catalysis today are involved singularly or in small groups at small entrepreneurial companies around the world, especially in the United States. This book should be a tremendously useful reference book as these scientists design runs with heterogeneous catalysts, interpret their experimental data, and model the kinetics todescribe their results, Describes how to conduct kinetic experiments with heterogeneous catalysts, analyze and model the results, and characterize the catalysts Detailed analysis of mass transfer in liquid phase reactions involving porous catalysts. Important to the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries so it has appeal to many researchers in both industry and academia (chemical engineering and chemistry departments, Heterogeneous catalysis has shaped our past and will shape our future. Already involved in a trillion dollar's worth of gross domestic product, catalysis holds the key to near term impact areas such as improved chemical process efficiency, environmental remediation, development of new energy sources, and new materials. Furthermore, recent advances in understanding and computing chemical reactivity at the quantum level are opening new pathways that will accelerate the design of catalysts for specific functions. This enormous potential will ultimately be turned into reality in laboratory reactors and have its impact on society and the economy in the industrial reactors that lie at the heart of all chemical processes. Because the quanti- tive measure of catalyst performance is the reaction rate, its measurement is central to progress in catalysis. The pages that follow are a comprehensive guide to success for reaction rate measurements and analysis in catalytic systems. The topics chosen, the clarity of presentation, and the liberal use of specific examples illuminate the full slate of issues that must be mastered to produce reliable kinetic results. The unique combination of characterization techniques, thorough disc- sion of how to test for and eliminate heat and mass transfer artifacts, evaluation of and validity tests for rate parameters, and justification of the uniform surface approximation, along with the more standard ideal reactor analyses and development of rate expressions from sequences of elementary steps, will enrich readers from both science and engineering backgrounds.
