Mit seinem Fruhwerk Die Leiden des jungen Werther macht sich Goethe nicht nur unter den chinesischen Gelehrten, sondern auch bei einer breiten Leserschaft einen Namen. Gleich die erste UEbersetzung des Werther wurde 1922 mit grosser Begeisterung aufgenommen. Mit uber zweihundert verschiedenen Ausgaben (auf dem Festland, in Hongkong und Taiwan) ist es auch heute noch das am meisten ubersetzte Werk unter allen Romanen und Erzahlungen Goethes. Ausgehend von einem funktionsorientierten Ansatz der UEbersetzungstheorie wird in dieser Studie die Rezeptionsgeschichte von chinesischen Werther-UEbersetzungen in den letzten hundert Jahren untersucht. Dabei wird festgestellt, dass dieses Werk immer wieder von den gesellschaftlichen Umstanden einer bestimmten Zeit beeinflusst und dass es von verschiedenen Lesern zu verschiedenen Zeiten auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise wahrgenommen bzw. bewusst an bestimmte Situationen angepasst wird. Das Werther-Bild wirkt in diesem Sinne wie ein Spiegel fur China, denn in ihm sieht man nicht nur einen sich immer wieder verandernden Werther, sondern auch die vielfaltigen Veranderungen der chinesischen Gesellschaft in den letzten hundert Jahren schlechthin.
