Reviews
In this solid spin-off from Cuban author Pedro's Havana Quartet, police detective Mario Conde investigates the 1989 murder of 73-year-old Pedro Cuang in Havana's Chinatown. Fans of the Havana Quartet will welcome Conde's return. Publishers Weekly How nice it is to watch a high-powered talent at work on a form that toooften relies on flat-footed prose. Booklist Padura on his very best form. Once again, we have Padura'a irresistible combination of quirky storytelling and a vivid evocation of the city of Havana - Padura's specialities, in fact. The translation by Peter Bush does full justice to the novel, which was inspired by the author's work as ajournalist when investigating the history of Havana's Barrio Chino. ELN Barry Forshaw "Grab a Snake by the Tail" is pitted with black humour, noir as the gods intended it to be. This intelligent and insightful crime novel is thoroughly intriguing. It will have you examining your own prejudices and assumptions. Conde is a compelling character and ultimately this is a very satisfying read. Synopsis
Mario Conde investigates a murder in the Barrio Chino, the rundownChinatown of Havana. Not his usual beat, but when Conde was asked to takethe case by his colleague, the sultry, perfectly proportioned LieutenantPatricia Chion, a frequent object of his nightly fantasies, he could n't resist. The case proves to be unusual. Pedro Cuang, a lonely old man, is found hanging naked from a beam in the ceiling of his dingy room. One of his fingers has been amputated and a drawing of two arrows was engraved with a knife on his chest. Was this a ritual Santería killing or a just asordid settling of accounts in a world of drug trafficking that began to infiltrate Cuban society in the 1980s? Soon Conde discovers unexpected connections, secret businesses and a history of misfortune, uprooting and loneliness that affected many immigrant families from China. As ever withPadura, the story is soaked in atmosphere: the drinking of rum in deliciously smoke-filled bars, the friendships, the food and beautiful women., Mario Conde investigates a murder in the Barrio Chino, the rundown Chinatown of Havana. Not his usual beat, but when Conde is asked to take the case by the sultry, perfectly proportioned Police Lieutenant Patricia Chion, a frequent object of his nightly fantasies, he can't resist. Pedro Cuang is found hanging naked from a beam in the ceiling of his dingy room. One of his fingers has been cut off, and the outline of two arrows was carved on his chest. Was this a ritual Santería killing or a just a sordid settling of accounts among drug traffickers beginning to infiltrate Cuba in the 1980s? The Barrio Chino was once one of the largest Chinatowns in the West. Now it feels like a ghetto of uprooted families, with its derelict cemetery and boarded-up shops. The story is soaked in atmosphere: African spells cast by babalao sorcerers, deliciously smoke-filled bars, deep friendships, and beautiful women, especially Patricia Chion. - 1***1 (20)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaIt's on me for not reading the description of this being an ex-library copy. I was expecting it to be, but that's completely my fault. The product is exactly as described, in good condition and of good quality. Shipping was fast. Appearance good, no pages ripped and cover is not bent. It was sent in a bag instead of a box, though, which could have led to damage in shipping. Overall I'm happy and would buy from this seller again.El lado oscuro (Spanish Edition) (#156832766019)
- s***8 (121)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThis was an ex-library book, as had been mentioned in the listing. Just a few stickers here and there; nothing that would make it hard to read this graphic novel. It was shipped fairly quickly! Although the packaging could have been better, it managed to survive intact, so I'm happy! Condition is pretty good and nothing's missing. All in all, an excellent transaction and I'd buy from the seller again!

I contacted the seller and send them copies of the pages. They apologized for their oversight and rectified the issue. I appreciate the prompt communication and rectification of the issue. thanks.
