Remember the Christmas windows at Famous-Barr, Stix, Baer and Fuller, and Scruggs, Vandervoort, Barney? Famous had dancing bears for one Christmas. Stix, the Grand Leader, once had a Christmas castle built around its windows. Scruggs had a Christmas train to transport kids to Santa's house. The windows were destinations for generations of St. Louisans. They are treasured remembrances. Today Candy Cane Lane, Reindeer Road or Snowflake Street; the one million lights of Tilles Park or Our Lady of the Snows; the Enchanted Forest in Arnold; Kimmswick, Hermann, St. Peters, O'Fallon, Eureka . . . all over St. Louis, new memories are made every December. The basic traditions of an old-fashioned Christmas in St. Louis are not forgotten but are blended with the folkways of the area in historic neighborhoods, retail and commercial landmarks, and fantastic community celebrations.
