Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a video game produced by Next Level Games for the Xbox 360 and published by Activision. It was the first Marvel game Next Level Games produced, and the first in a line of more family friendly games Activision published for Marvel. In Friend or Foe, players take the role of Spider-Man from the Marvel Comics enterprise. In this lighthearted RPG meets arcade style game, Spidey, with the help of the New Goblin, must defeat Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, and Venom. Rather than only fighting the enemies, Spidey must also find out why they are mysteriously disappearing and what nefarious deeds their kidnapper has planned.Friend or Foe begins with an attack on Spidey where he is saved by Nick Fury. He then sets up the game challenge. The same sort of asteroid that brought Venom to earth has delivered five shards that Nick worries may bring other symbiotes. While hunting down these shards, Spidey encounters a new, dangerous kind of foot soldier, known as a P.H.A.N.T.O.M., which is short for Perpetual Holographic Avatar Nano-Tech Offensive Monsters. These creatures appear to be helping a mysterious enemy brainwash and control various villains to attack Spidey and S.H.I.E.L.D. As Spidey frees each bad guy from mind control, that villain swears revenge on the person mind controlling them and works to assist Spidey in some way. Spidey also gets help from various other Marvel heroes, including Black Cat, Iron Fist, Silver Sable, Prowler, Lizard, and Blade, to discover the identity of the culprit. Throughout the game, Spidey fights enemies using an intuitive combo system of kicks, punches, and jumps. This rewards players for learning Spidey's move set and using it to deal damage to enemies. Punches and kicks are supplemented by Spidey's web slinging, which he can use to move quickly around the arena, tie up enemies, or cause enemies to smash into one another. Spidey is never without a sidekick, who shares a similar move set with the exception of web based moves and can be controlled by a second player. The overall mood of the fights is analogous to the comics with an emphasis on comical sound effects, cartoonish enemies, and a lighthearted atmosphere. This helps make the game much more approachable for younger players when compared to other Spidey games, as does its E-rated content.Friend or Foe can be an approachable Spider-Man game for the Xbox 360 with easily learned controls that young children and nongamers can pick up easily. With an E rating and an emphasis on comic book style combat, younger Spidey fans can enjoy this game. The same goes for gamers who like games they can just pick up and play. This game can also offer a unique two player experience on the Xbox, with two players being able to play simultaneously for the same team, each one using their own Xbox 360 controller. The game is quick and action packed, with lots of replay value. This can make Friend or Foe from Next Level Games an excellent choice for anyone looking to get a Spidey game they can enjoy with nongamer friends, younger siblings, and children.
