As a genre, doo wop is generally associated with syrupy ballads full of gorgeous harmonies and puppy love notions of romance, but doo wop can rock out, too, as this 20-track collection makes clear. Oh, there's plenty of puppy love here, but there are also songs that cut a little deeper, like the Miracles' bossa nova-paced "(I Need Some) Money," which underscores the fact that even puppy love can be economically draining. Other highlights included in this delightful compilation are the Cadillacs' manic "Sugar-Sugar," and three enduring classics, Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop," the Regents' original version of "Barbara Ann" (complete with saxophone), and the Cleftones' wise and elegant "Heart and Soul."
