De nek vormt de verbinding tussen hoofd en romp. Om voldoende bewegingen van het hoofd mogelijk te maken is een grote mate van beweeglijkheid nodig van de halswervelkolom. Deze grote beweeglijkheid heeft echter ook een keerzijde: de nek is kwetsbaar en letsels ten gevolge van (auto)ongevallen komen veel voor. Vaak ontstaan hierbij naast orthopedische ook neurologische problemen. Dit komt doordat in en rond de cervicale wervelkolom zich talloze neurologische structuren bevinden zoals ruggenmerg, spinale zenuwen en de plexus brachialis.
