Synopsis
These Memoirs Chronicle the life and times of one of Mississippi's most prominent attorneys, and the state's fifty-sixth governor, from his birth in rural Lafayette County in 1926 through his two terms as district attorney of Hinds, Madison, and Yazoo Counties, the Beckwith trials, his 1967 and 1971 gubernatorial campaigns, the legendary 1978 senatorial race, his last campaign in 1987, and his life after politics.A fifth generation Mississippian, Bill Waller grew up on a farm in Lafayette County. After earning a bachelor's degree at the University of Memphis and a law degree from the Ole Miss law school, he began the practice of law in Jackson in 1950. He is married to the former Carroll Overton and has five children and fourteen grandchildren. Waller's vigorous prosecution of Byron De La Beckwith for the murder of Medgar Evers in 1964 catapulted him into national prominence. In 1971 Waller was elected governor in a major political upset. Historians and journalists mark his administration as a turning point in Mississippi history., These memoirs chronicle the life and times of one of Mississippi's most prominent attorneys, and the state's fifty-sixth governor, from his birth in rural Lafayette County in 1926 through his two terms as district attorney of Hinds, Madison, and Yazoo Counties, the Beckwith trials, his 1967 and 1971 gubernatorial campaigns, the legendary 1978 senatorial race, his last campaign in 1987, and his life after politics.
