When a strange bunch of West coast musicians called The Mothers of Invention released their first LP, Freak Out , a whole new musical language was born. Led by the late, great Frank Zappa, The Mothers broke every rule in the book, then created some new rules and broke them too. This book sheds new light on the original Mothers line up musicians like Bunk Gardner, Don Preston, Roy Estrada, Jimmy Carl Black, Motorhead and Buzz Gardner, and brings up to date the various musical and extra-curricular exploits of the various members up to the present, including the formation of The Grandmothers, and their subsequent touring and recording. This is a splendid mix of interviews, photos, reminiscences, and reportage which sums up what the Mothers and Grandmothers are all about. For fans, here are reminders and valuable background to the music. For the uninitiated, signposts for the discovery of a whole new musical universe.
