Reviews
Praise for The Lost Gate "This ambitious tale is well crafted, highly detailed, and pleasantly accessible."- Publishers Weekly "The author of Ender's Game brings his masterful storytelling to a new series that should find favor among his many fans as well as readers looking for more stories in the Harry Potter vein."- Library Journal " The Lost Gate is without question a fun and entertaining journey that readers will definitely want to continue. I for one, can't wait to read more about Danny, Wad, gate magic, and the Mither Mages..."- Fantasy Book Critic "Card is a formidable storyteller with many strengths, particularly that of making the reader like and identify with his protagonists. He shows us that whether a boy is the offspring of ancient gods or some nascent military genius, he's still subject to the same self-doubt and awkwardness we remember from our own childhood efforts to understand and cope with a sometimes alien-seeming world."- The Miami Herald, "As always, everyone will be struck by the power of Card's children, always more and less than human, perfect yet struggling, tragic yet hopeful, wondrous and strange."  - Publishers Weekly, starred review on Ender's Shadow "Threads from all the other books in the series flow through this narrative, which fills gaps, fleshes out familiar characterizations, and introduces well-limned new ones. Ender's angst, combined with his handling of the intrigue swirling around him, ensures the depth for which the series is famous." -Booklist on Ender in Exile, Card is a formidable storyteller with many strengths, particularly that of making the reader like and identify with his protagonists. Synopsis
Orson Scott Card's The Lost Gate is the first book in the Mithermages series from the New York Times bestselling author of Ender's Game . Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself. He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people. There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English -- but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see. Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family. The Mithermages series The Lost Gate The Gate Thief Gatefather, Danny North grew up in a family of gods - the poor remnants of the mages who once went by names like Odin, Thor, and Freya. When the gates that led to their home world of Westil were closed by Loki in 632 a.d., they lost much of their power. When Danny realizes that he is a gatemage, he has to flee the family compound in western Virginia and make his own way in the world, at least until he learns how to control his gift and reopen a gate between the worlds. Not only does he face the ordinary dangers of a teenager trying to survive on his own in America, and the mages who would kill him if they realized what he was, but also, if he ever succeeds in opening a gate to Westil, he can expect to be stripped of all his power by the Gate Thief, who seems determined to keep all gates closed.
