From the Preface;The purpose of this book is not to consider the consequences of the changes that have taken place in the last century, but instead to record life as it was as recently as my childhood. I was there then. I remember those days. They were free and happy days that no child can experience today or ever again. Our door was never locked. There was always activity, life, around the house, a dog, a cat, chickens, horses, cattle, children and their parents, and smoke rose from the brick chimney, always an aroma, be it of new-mown hay, fresh-sawed wood, or the dung from hens or cows.I want my children to know about it. I want this generation and later ones to be able to read about it, to know there was such a time when we enjoyed true freedom, a freedom for which there is no room today.Walter S.
