The Gospel of St. John: A Newly Discovered Commentary is an exciting window into the mind of one of the most brilliant biblical commentators of the past two centuries. Readers of all backgrounds and interests will benefit greatly from the wisdom and judicious historical and exegetical care of J. B. Lightfoot. This was true for his previously published work, and evidently, it remains true for these newly discovered ones as well. This is an important publication that I would not want to be without, and thus it comes highly recommended., Here is the second of IVP's planned releases of recently-discovered commentaries by famous scholar J. B. Lightfoot. . . . Though many of Lightfoot's commentaries have been popular for over a century, these releases cover commentaries on parts of the Bible that he did pursue publishing because dear friends wrote on those same books of the Bible. Now with this publishing event, his work was not in vain. . . . We have here both an interesting, historical commentary and something of a collector's item. You will want to check it out., Though Lightfoot was dealing with an older incredulity and skepticism, nevertheless his observations and evaluations are helpful as we face similar suspicions and cynicisms. And his commentary shows the value of thoughtfully reading passages from the original languages. This would make a great addition to the library of your favorite seminarian or pastor. In the spring of 2013, Ben Witherington III discovered hundreds of pages of biblical commentary by Lightfoot in the Durham Cathedral Library. While incomplete, these commentaries represent a goldmine for historians and biblical scholars, as well as for the many people who have found Lightfoot's work both informative and edifying, deeply learned and pastorally sensitive. In addition to the material on the Acts of the Apostles, published in volume one, there were detailed notes on the Fourth Gospel, a text that Lightfoot loved and lectured on frequently. These pages contain his commentary notes for John 1-12.
