The other is the Instructional Sequence Matters series by Patrick Brown. It promotes active learning through the explore-before-explain sequence of instruction. This one-stop professional learning resource starts with a clear explanation of how to combine assessment probes with the explore-before-explain method. Then it tells how to plan activities so your young scientists will construct the accurate knowledge on which they can anchor their future learning. Finally, 11 model lessons provide a replicable instructional framework, Lesson titles range from "Marble Roll" to "Batteries, Bulbs, and Wires" to "What Is the Result of a Chemical Change?" If you're a beginning teacher, you can use the model lessons to build a repertoire of research-based strategies to use throughout your career. If you're an experienced teacher who values hands-on approaches but wishes your lessons had more impact, you'll benefit from learning the value of reorganizing your instruction.
