Synopsis
Outlines the history of London's sewers, from the nineteenth century onwards, using a variety of colour illustrations, photographs and newspaper engravings to show their development from medieval spaces to the complex, modern citywide network largely constructed in the 1860s - a network still in place today., London's sewers could be called the city's forgotten underground: mostly unseen subterranean spaces that are of absolutely vital importance, the capital's sewers nonetheless rarely get the same degree of attention as the Tube. Paul Dobraszczyk here outlines the fascinating history of London's sewers from the nineteenth century onwards, using a rich variety of colour illustrations, photographs and newspaper engravings to show their development from medieval spaces to the complex, citywide network, largely constructed in the 1860s, that is still in place today. This book explores London's sewers in history, fiction and film, including how they entice intrepid explorers into their depths, from the Victorian period to the present day., London's sewers are perhaps the forgotten underground of city: invisible spaces that rarely get the same degree of attention as the Tube. Yet, as this book shows, they are a vital part of London's infrastructure, the veritable bowels of the city. The author outlines the fascinating history of London's sewers, from the nineteenth century onwards, using a rich variety of colour illustrations, photographs and newspaper engravings to show their development from medieval spaces to the complex, modern citywide network largely constructed in the 1860s - a network still in place today. This book also explores the allure of London's sewers in both fiction and film, and how they entice intrepid explorers, from the Victorian period to the present day., Named by The Guardian as One of the Top 10 Science and Technology Books for June 2014 Victorian London was filthy. The city was growing at an exponential rate, and the existing systems of waste disposal could not cope, resulting in a sanitary crisis. The solution was a new drainage system for the entire city, which was constructed mainly in the 1860s. Paul Dobraszczyk charts the development and construction of this immense project, using both contemporary and modern imagery to illustrate the complex engineering and magnificent architecture built deep underground to service the modern city of London.

I appreciate the speed with which Whattaplace shipped my order to me. Regretfully the item was lost somewhere in the shipment process. I also liked the asking price as well. I dialogued with the vendor, about the item not showing up when expected. They got right back to me, and said they'd refund the purchase price (which they did). I was to watch for the item if it got delivered. I'd notify Whattaplace of that. I'd recommend this vendor & would buy from them again.
