"Morin has been at the forefront of evolutionary anthropologists of a new kind for a decade... Morin concentrates on the possible mechanisms of the transmission of cultural patterns, and the ways they may stabilize. The entire book is written in a very appealing essayistic style, while at the same time facing serious issues with a deep conceptual analysis of the recent literature...The approach of Morin is certainly a very serious proposal to relate cultural traditions and evolution. Its emphasis of finding the keys in the population of people and ideas, rather than simply in genes, is worthy of attention both of evolutionary psychologists, and for the researchers of many cultural disciplines."--Evolutionary Psychological Science, The entire book is written in a very appealing essayistic style, while at the same time facing serious issues with a deep conceptual analysis of the recent literature ... Synopsis
Of all the things we do and say, most will never be repeated or reproduced. Once in a while, however, an idea or a practice generates a chain of transmission that covers more distance through space and time than any individual person ever could. What makes such transmission chains possible? For two centuries, the dominant view (from psychology to anthropology) was that humans owe their cultural prosperity to their powers of imitation. In this view, modern culturesexist because the people who carry them are gifted at remembering, storing and reproducing information. How Traditions Live and Die proposes an alternative to this standard view. What makes traditionslive is not a general-purpose imitation capacity. Cultural transmission is partial, selective, often unfaithful. Some traditions live on in spite of this, because they tap into widespread and basic cognitive preferences. These attractive traditions spread, not by being better retained or more accurately transferred, but because they are transmitted over and over. This theory is used to shed light on various puzzles of cultural change (from the distribution of bird songs to the staying power ofchildren's rhymes) and to explain the special relation that links the human species to its cultures. Morin combines recent work in cognitive anthropology with new advances in quantitative culturalhistory, to map and predict the diffusion of traditions. This book is both an introduction and an accessible alternative to contemporary theories of cultural evolution., This book brings together cognitive science and quantitative cultural history to look into the causes of cultural survival. Instead of blind and faithful imitation, it explores the appeal of traditions evolved to fit cognitive biases. This is both an introduction and an alternative to contemporary theories of cultural evolution., Of all the things we do and say, most will never be repeated or reproduced. - r***r (2959)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaBook arrived today, 2 days before deadline given by the seller. Well-packaged & in good condition. Price was very competitive, & the book was accurately listed. Great communication. I appreciate the seller getting back to me when I was having trouble tracking the book's delivery progress. Apparently there were 2 different tracking numbers - one in Canada & the other in the U.S., since it was initially shipped from Canada. Thank you very much for your quick response & helpful information.Rethinking Investing: A Very Short Guide to Very Long-Term Investing by Charles (#396183075510)
- e***_ (13)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaSeller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.
- 0***i (5)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThe first item arrived with some damage to the inside back cover, but the seller responded immediately, assuring me they’d provide a replacement, and even told me I could keep the original. They were upfront about a short delay, and gave a clear estimated ship date, and followed up right on time once it shipped. The replacement arrived in perfect condition and exactly as described. I really appreciated their transparency and professionalism. Would definitely buy from them again!
