It is hard and hold's its shape with or without anything inside of it. It's got a padding inside of it and it is very large, as the button to snap it closed is far up so there is a bit of a space between the sheath and the closed lid, about an extra inch or more. This gives your knife plenty of room, it is made for the 4-5 inch knife handle length for folding pocket knives.
