In the year 2029, Vile Malmort and his army of aliens connect the ruins of New York City to their space station via an “Astrotube” and plan to take over the Earth. To ward off an invasion, a team of cyborgs called Special Cybernetic Attack Team (S.C.A.T.) jump into action and attempt to save the day by sending the aliens back to the far reaches of the universe. Produced by Nastsume, S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team for the Nintendo Entertainment System is a side-view shooter game with a science fiction storyline. It first appeared in North America in 1991 and in the UK the following year. This one or two-player game lets two players play simultaneously as the male character, Arnold, or female character, Sigourney, (named for action film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sigourney Weaver), although a single player gets to take on the role of Arnold. There is no skill difference between the characters, who have the ability to fly through the air in eight different directions while shooting at enemies with a gun. They also have the assistance of two satellite modules that attack enemies along with the players. S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team has five stages, each ending with its own boss for the cyborgs to beat before moving on to the next stage. Game play follows a simple format as the screen scrolls automatically in both horizontal and vertical directions until the player reaches the end of the stage, where the boss waits. Award-winning music by Kiyohiro Sada completes the game’s soundtrack. This American version of the game is considerably easier to play than the original Japanese game as players have more lives and power. The version released in the United Kingdom is similar to the American version, except for changes to the game title and characters. S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team is a must-have title for anyone who has an original Nintendo Entertainment System as it stands out for its entertaining game play and quality graphics for the time period.
