Reviews
"A thoroughgoing introduction for the intelligent reader-written in a highly accessible style, with plenty of excellent examples and clear, sound argumentation. Hendry has done an outstanding job of laying out her vision of the important theoretical positions in cultural and social anthropology, while also telling us about their weaknesses. Her book is not merely a copy of earlier efforts of a similar sort but represents some careful, productive, and highly intelligent rethinking of the priorities." - Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University, A thoroughgoing introduction for the intelligent reader-written in a highly accessible style, with plenty of excellent examples and clear, sound argumentation. To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished." )-(Eric Korn),( Times Literary Supplement )

Synopsis
Other People's Worlds offers the perfect introduction to cultural and social anthropology for anyone approaching the subject for the first time. Hendry introduces classic theoretical ideas of the key founders of cultural and social anthropology, placing them in their historical and geographical context. Carefully structured so that one chapter builds on the next, Other People's Worlds covers the core topics in an even-handed and illuminating manner, introducing the reader to divergent views on all the most basic subjects-food, hygiene, gift-exchange, rites of passage, symbolism, religion, politics, and the environment-and raising awareness of the emotional value people place on those views. Covering a wide array of countries, it brings the subject of cultural and social anthropology right into the neighborhood of the reader, wherever they are in the world. Combining an abundance of references and further readings for the serious student with an immensely readable and engaging writing style, Other People's Worlds offers a compelling introduction to an enigmatic and exciting subject, drawing out its relevance and value for the complex multicultural world in which we live.

Item is as described. Poor communication from the seller regarding extremely slow shipping - had to contact eBay to get his attention to actually ship the item. With that being said, the seller provided a full refund for the item and still promptly sent the item. I believe shipping issue was probably an oversight because of the holidays and the seller did his best to make things right. I would not hesitate to buy from this seller again.

Seller accepted two best offers, and then let the two books sit for two weeks, unnoticed. Only acted after I sent two messages asking for an update. Seller shipped one book and then refunded it. Then, refused to ship the 2nd book, but issued a refund. I could not recommend this seller as they had no sense of humor, and were rather dull in their correspondence--oh, and the huge delay, too. All around disappointing.

Let me introduce you to the most petulant child we have been unfortunate enough to encounter over our long time selling on ebay. We made an error on the orders. Noted. As soon as we were notified we immediately shipped the first book and refunded the purchase. Because of the continuous ridiculous messages I also refunded the 2nd book and blocked them to make it just go way, Stear clear of this one at all cost.
