Product Information

This compilation gathers 10 films screened between 2001 and 2003 at the Different Film Festival in Paris. With pieces chosen from various parts of the world, the collection represents an eclectic mix of new and established filmmaking talent. Provocative and moving in their own way, each of the featured films (which range from three to seventeen minutes in length) uses different strategies for exploring issues of the body, desire, human interaction, self-discovery, and society at large. While most of the featured films shift the emphasis away from a traditional narrative and towards visual imagery as a means of storytelling, a few of the included artists (Richard Beaune, Maurice Lemaître, Tony Wu, and Georges Hsin) rely on narration to get their points across. By mixing the expected with the experimental, these artists prove that creative filmmaking strategies can incorporate traditional narrative elements without losing potency or depth. The human form appears as a common theme throughout much of the collection, forming the main focus of works by Rozenn Nobilet (who turns the body into a narrator of sorts), and Egbert Mittelstädt, whose film captures a dancer's body in motion. Stéphane Marti and Hugo Verlinde also use the body as a jumping point from which to make larger observations about society.
