| GENUINE The Mercian Regiment OFFICERS BRITISH SWAGGER STICK Swagger Sticks were introduced as an item of commissioned rank equipment at the time of King Charles I, but were used for a much more serious purpose than they are today. At the time of Charles I all junior officers were empowered to inflict punishment on the spot for minor offences. Old manuscripts record that such misdemeanors as “sneezing in the ranks, spitting or scratching the head” earned immediate punishment to the tune of 12 strokes across the back with the swagger stick. Originally, it was a functional implement used to direct military drill and maneuvers, or to administer physical punishment. Nowadays it is more often a traditional visual
attribute. Swagger sticks are most familiarly carried by military officers or more senior non-commissioned ranks. They are also often carried by officers in police and paramilitary forces. In the British Army and other militaries following the commonwealth traditions, commissioned officers carry swagger sticks when in formal uniform as a symbol of rank. Warrant Officers and Senior NCOs carry longer PACE STICKS (Available in the CONTACT LEFT EBAY SHOP) or regimental sticks instead, although a Regimental Sergeant Major may be seen sporting a swagger stick. British swagger sticks are often topped with a silver cap, bearing regimental insignia. A swagger stick remains an essential part of an officer's equipments. One of the original purposes of the swagger stick was to help keep the officers from putting their hands in their pockets.
