Reference: Comparison between 74HC and 74LS series ICs 1. LS is low consumption Schottk, HC is high speed COMS. The speed of LS is slightly higher than that of HC。The input and output of HCT are compatible with those of LS, but in low power consumption. F is high speed Schottk circuit. 2. LS is in TTL signal level where as HC is in COMS level. 3. The input of LS open circuit is level-high while the input of HC is not allowed to be open circuit. Therefore, HC circuit always accompanies a pull-up or pull-down resistors to determine the invalid input signal level. For LS, there is no such requirement. 4. The pull-up of LS is strong and the pull-down is weak, while the pull-up and pull-down are the same for HC. 5. Different working voltage: 5V for LS, but 2V-6V for HC. 6. Different signal level threshold: Since LS is TTL signal level, the level-low and level-high is 0.8V and 2.4V, respectively. But for HC (CMOS signal level), when working in 5V, the level-low and level-high is 0.3V and 3.6V, respectively. Therefore, CMOS can drive TTL, but not the reverse. 7. The driving capacity is different: For LS, the level-high driving capacity is 5mA, and 20mA for level-low; whereas the driving capacity is 5mA for both level-high and level-low for CMOS. 8. The anti-static capacity of CMOS component is bad, so it is easy to cause the problem of latch. Therefore, the input of CMOS component cannot connect to power supply directly.
