The smaller 5mm ball unscrews for the item to be fitted. Generally the larger 8mm ball WILL NOT unscrew. The measurements given are the thickness of the bar and the length of the bar NOT INCLUDING any balls or threads. The length measurement is taken in a straight line from top to bottom so that the ruler would make a D shape on the bar.
